Dragon*Con Art Show Was Great PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 20 August 2008 12:21

Several pieces of my work were recently exhibited at the Dragon*Con Art Show. The Dragon*Con science fiction and fantasy convention is one of the largest of its type in North America with more than 20,000 annual attendees. The art show was one of many entertainment tracks available during the 4 day run August 29 - September 2, 2008. This year's jury was made up of Hugo Award winner Steven Hickman, veteran sci-fi book cover painter Rowena and illustrator Matt Hughes who was the winner of Best in Show at Dragon*Con 2007 and a designer for the crew of Lord of the Rings.

I had a table in the Artist's Bazaar where I sold originals and prints of my art, along with signed copies of my illustrated puzzle book "Emblems from the Runes of Magness". Also I was a presenter for a programming slot on creating custom scripts for fiction and role playing games. My program was listed as ART042 Neography and Scripts in the program guide. It followed right after Roger Dean, illustrator of the YES and ASIA album covers.  I truly enjoyed sharing my interest in creating fictional scripts and ciphers with other folks who are just as weird as me. During the 4 day run I met several talented artists who were very personable and generous in sharing their ideas and friendly critiques. Dragon*Con was a great event and I'm really looking forward to it again next year. Hope to see you there.

New Life Drawings Gallery PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 03 August 2008 15:24
A new gallery for Life Drawings has been added to the site. This gallery features works I've drawn from life during various sessions in the studio of Knoxville artist James Covington. Normally during these sessions James and the other students will paint but I prefer to draw. James is a very talented artist who spends a great deal of time pursuing his craft. He has traveled across the country taking classes in places like New Mexico to train under notable instructors such as Lafell. Someday I'll convince him to share his paintings with the wider world. For now he is talented but reclusive.

Added New Gallery - Skate Girls PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 July 2008 01:46
skategirl_8_t.jpgI've got a new gallery up for my Skate Girls series. You can take a look here. The drawings in this series and theme are done with Prismacolor regular and Verithin on paper. Mostly they are 9" x 12". I'll be posting many of them up for sale or auction soon. The Buy Now price is $90 each on Ebay. Email me via chris.range (at) gmail (dot) com if you'd like to purchase one for a little less. It's worth a few bucks to me to not have to fool around with posting an auction.

Skate Girls 11 and 12 Added PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 03 August 2008 14:25
Two new pieces, Skate Girl 11 and Skate Girl 12 have been added to the Skate Girls gallery. The current website price for these two pieces is $108 each. Both are Prismacolor noir and Verithin on 9 x 12, 50lb, acid free Canson paper. I center the art so that these pieces will fit in a standard 9 x 12 frame with a matte for an 8.5 x 11 or 8 x 10 viewing area.

Added the Green Dragon's Den PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 21 July 2008 11:50

I've added the Green Dragon's Den to the Special Links menu. Site owner Dan Grove has amassed an impressive collection of art over the last several years and he does a great job of presenting it to the public. A couple of my earliest online auction pieces are on the Den, so it occupies that space for me that a resturaunt owner might reserve on the wall for his first dollar. I can't emphasize enough what a great resource it is because I think it is wholly unique. I don't know of another place where an individual shares such a large private collection online. That's a treat for visitors and also a great kindness to the artists; many of whom are self-representing. The Den has some very useful links to resources concerning artist's rights. Thanks to that I've learned a thing or two about art business from the site as well. On my old site I'd done a write-up on the Green Dragon's Den. Here's an excerpt:

"The Green Dragon's Den is a premier site for fantasy art and is a showcase for one of the largest collections of its type on the Internet. In addition to ATC and ACEO art cards, there are lots of great pieces of full sized original drawings and paintings. Many of the names are instantly recognizable. Scot Eaton, Hildebrandt, Hoffman, Al Rio and Sportelli. Recently one of my fairy drawings - The Moonskull Faery - was added to the collection, along with a nice commentary. Green Dragon's Den features categories of Comic Book, Fantasy, Fairy, Pinup and Gothic art, along with wallpaper downloads and a themed store. It's well worth the visit for fantasy art fans."

It can be a real uphill climb to make it as a self-representing artist. Generous patrons like the Green Dragon's Den who share and promote the art are indispensible in that effort.
